Second Half Surge Sends the University of Bridgeport Past Chestnut Hill College, 11-6

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (3/13/2017) – Chestnut Hill College senior midfielder Lea Sanders (North Merrick, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals while classmate Samantha Herron (Cinnaminson, N.J.) added one goal and three assists, but it wouldn't be enough, as the Griffins fell, 11-6, to the University of Bridgeport this afternoon.  
 
Chestnut Hill College (0-5) opened the scoring just 29 seconds (29:31) into the contest, with Herron netting an unassisted tally. The Griffins would double their advantage just over a minute later (28:28) on a free position goal from junior attack Julia Galantich (Clinton Corners, N.Y.). The University of Bridgeport (4-1) would cut the Griffins' lead to one, 2-1, at the 23:42 mark, when senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) found freshman Barbara Orsini (North Babylon, N.Y.) for her 10th goal of the year. The two teams struggled to find their groove offensively, until a goal from Purple Knight senior defender Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) knotted the game at 2-2 (5:31). The Griffins found their groove just before half, with Sanders netting her first goal of the game with 3:47 remaining off a feed from Herron. The duo would connect just under two minutes later (1:55) to up the host's advantage to a pair, 4-2. The Purple Knights continued to press down the stretch, however, with junior midfielder Abigail Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) scoring with 29 seconds remaining to send the game into the break with the Griffins leading 4-3.
 
The visitors blew open the game in the opening 10:24 of the second half, using a 6-0 run to take control of the game. Orsini and Mengel each netted a pair in the run, with sophomore Courtney Forry (Reinholds, Pa.) and freshman Joanna Muniz (Queens, N.Y.) each scoring one. The Griffins scored their first of the half when Herron found sophomore Julia Reinert (Bridgeport, Pa.) at the 16:42 mark to cut the deficit down to four, 9-5. The Griffins were not able to cut the deficit down anymore, with a late tally (00:01) by the visitors giving the game its 11-6 final.
 
Mengel and Orsini each netted a hat-trick for the Purple Knights, with Benesh adding two goals and one assist. Freshman goalkeeper Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) (4-1) stopped nine shots in the victory. The University of Bridgeport held a 23-21 edge in shots and a 19-14 edge in successful clears.
 
The Griffins were led by Sanders' pair of goals and Herron's goal and three assists. Reinert (1 goal, 1 assist), Galantich (1 goal) and senior Rachel Perry (Gilbertsville, Pa.) (1 goal), also scored for the Scarlet and Gold. Senior goalkeeper Katie Joe Lang (Manassas, Va.) stopped 10 shots in the loss (0-5). The Griffins held a 12-7 advantage in draw controls for the game.
 
The Chestnut Hill College women's lacrosse opens Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Saturday, March 18, when they host Caldwell University for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
