Box Score 2 Bronxville, N.Y. - (4/18/2017) – In support of a strong start from junior
Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.), Chestnut Hill College offered two big innings of insurance. The result was a 7-4 victory in the opener of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) at Concordia College (NY). Sophomore third baseman
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) and senior shortstop
Jon Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) provided the clutch hits. In game two, the Scarlet and Gold rode the combined effort of junior
Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) and sophomore
Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.), who held the Clippers to one earned run on three hits and a pair of walks. The heart of the Griffin order - junior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and sophomore catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) – knocked in three of four runs in the 4-2 final.
Chestnut Hill College (17-10-1, 11-4) used their momentum from game one to get a run in the first inning of game two. A two-out walk to Gilham, a wild pitch, and an error by the Concordia College (3-24, 2-12) third baseman brought it in on Owens' at-bat. The Clippers responded with a pair of runs in the second inning, 2-1, but that advantage was short-lived as the Griffins reclaimed their lead with two runs of their own in the top of the third inning. There, sophomore centerfielder
Vincent Case (Southampton, Pa.) led off with a bunt single down the third base line, before a botched pick off, a Baturgil walk, a wild pitch, and a one-out Gilham grounder to third base brought home the first run of the at-bat, 2-2. The second came just a batter later with an Owens double to right center, 3-2. Insurance was added in the seventh inning, where a lead-off walk to Szumigala and a one-out walk to Case providing the ammo for Chestnut Hill College to score on an error by the Clipper shortstop, 4-2. Sibson (5-0) allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out four over the first four innings. Cattai earned his league-leading, seventh save of the season allowing one hit and striking out four over the final three frames.
In game one, Chestnut Hill College was first on the scoreboard as well. A lead-off walk to senior second baseman
Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), a Szumigala sacrifice, an error by the Clipper shortstop, and a Baturgil fielder's choice plated it in the second inning, 1-0. The Griffins added three runs in the fourth inning, there a lead-off single through the right side from senior center fielder
Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.), a double to left field from DiBonaventure, and a Szumigala double to center field brought home the first two Chestnut Hill College runs, 3-0. The third came home after a walk to Baturgil, a pair of balks, and a fielder's choice to third base off the bat of senior left fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.), 4-0. Three more Griffin runs made in 7-0 in the top of the eighth inning, which was plenty to endure a four-run threat in the bottom of the frame, 7-4. Baturgil (2-for-3) and DiBonaventure (2-for-3) had two hits apiece. Baturgil scored once and knocked in three runs while DiBonaventure scored three times. Szumigala knocked in the other two Chestnut Hill College tallies. Kelly (3-3) allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out 11 over 7.1 innings of work. Junior
Pat Geraghty (Morristown, N.J.) recorded a pair of outs in the eighth inning, before Cattai secured his sixth save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning.
Chestnut Hill College resumes their CACC schedule on Friday, April 21, when they visit Goldey-Beacom College for a 2:00 p.m. twin bill.
