Chestnut Hill College and Concordia College (NY) Split Pair of 8-0 CACC Finals

4/19/2017 12:11:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (4/18/2017) – The final of both of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games versus Concordia College (NY) was 8-0 as Chestnut Hill College won the opener of the doubleheader in six innings, before dropping the second game to the Clippers in five frames. Sophomore second baseman Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) all but clinched the first game for senior Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) with her first collegiate home run coming in grand-slam fashion. Sophomore left fielder Marissa Maioran (Rockaway, N.J.) led the Griffins in game two with a pair of hits (2-for-2).

Maioran recorded her first hit of game two in the second inning with a liner to left field. Unfortunately, Chestnut Hill College (10-24, 8-10) could not do any damage to Concordia College (NY) (4-16, 3-11) then as final Griffin went down swinging. The Scarlet and Gold had their best chance to score in the fourth inning, but by that time it was already 8-0, Clippers. In the fourth, sophomore catcher Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.) led off with a single through the right side. After that, a pair of fly outs brought Maioran to the plate. She singled up the middle and advanced Riotte to second base, but a grounder to short soon brought the inning to a close.

In game one, Holloway took the wind out of the Clippers sails while Griffin runs in the second and fourth innings gave her a 2-0 advantage. In the second inning, a one-out walk to senior center fielder Ashley Sharp (Dresher, Pa.), an error on the Concordia College (NY) first baseman, and a fielder's choice off the bat of junior designate player Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.) brought home the first Chestnut Hill College run of the afternoon, 1-0. The Scarlet and Gold doubled their edge in the fourth inning with lead-off walk to Sharp, an error by the Clipper third baseman, and a two-out Sauer single to left field, 2-0. That spread remained through the fifth inning and the top half of the sixth, before the Griffins added to it in their final required at-bat. In the bottom of the sixth inning, another Clipper error, a stolen base, a Maioran single, another stolen base, a hit batsman, and Sauer's long drive extended the Chestnut Hill College lead to 6-0 before a one-out double to right field from senior shortstop Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.), a second hit batsman, a third hit batsman, and a Sharp single up the middle ended the affair early, 8-0. Holloway (7-11) allowed three hits and struck out six in the complete game effort.

Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Thursday, April 20, with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Wilmington University.
