Box Score 2 New Castle, Del. – (4/20/2017) – Chestnut Hill College scored all the runs it needed to defeat Wilmington University 6-5 in the first game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader during a big second inning that included a three-run double from junior designated player
Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.). With the game on the wire, the Scarlet and Gold went to sophomore
Jessica Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) for the save (2). Unfortunately, the Griffins could not duplicate the result in game two as a vengeful Wildcat crew outscored Chestnut Hill College 10-2 in five innings.
With the win in game one, Chestnut Hill College ties their CACC single-season win record (9). Sophomore second baseman
Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) (2-for-2) recorded a pair of hits in the opener, while sophomore left fielder
Marissa Maioran (Rockaway, N.J.) (2-for-2) and senior shortstop
Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.) (2-for-3) accomplished the same in game two.
Wilmington University (27-16, 13-9) made up for their game-one shortcomings with three runs in the first inning of game two, 3-0. Chestnut Hill College (11-25, 9-11) answered in the top of the second inning with a lead-off walk to senior center fielder
Ashley Sharp (Dresher, Pa.), a one-out Maioran single, a hit batsman, and a two-out Wildcat error brought home a pair of Griffins, 3-2. Unfortunately, the Wilmington University offense continued to produce, adding to their lead in the third inning, 6-2, one run in the fourth inning, 7-2, and three runs in the fifth inning, 10-2.
In the opener, a pair of second-inning, lead-off singles from sophomore catcher
Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.) and sophomore first baseman
Kaya Swanek (Pittston, Pa.) set the table. A Sharp sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position before Sauer's single scored the first Chestnut Hill College run, 1-0. A Wildcat error, 2-0, a Maioran bunt single, and Pulis' three-run double precipitated the next four Scarlet and Gold runs, 5-0.
The last one crossed after a dropped ball in left field, an infield single from sophomore third baseman
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.), and a beaning of Riotte, 6-0. Senior
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) held on as long as she could, limiting the Wildcats to three hits through the first six inning of the affair. She handed the game over to Heaton after allowing three runs in the bottom of the seventh, 6-3. Heaton allowed two more runs, 6-5, but no more in the process of closing the door. Holloway (8-11) struck out five runs in 6.2 innings of work.
Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, April 22, with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader versus the University of the Sciences (USciences).
