Box Score 2 Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (4/18/2018) – Breaking in the newly installed turf diamond at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, Chestnut Hill College opened their 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season with an afternoon doubleheader versus Concordia College (NY). The Clippers earned the league win in each contest, adding to a 4-1 game-one score with a 6-5 game-two triumph. The Griffins' eighth-inning rally came up a run shy before two ninth-inning Clipper runs salted away game one; then a 4-4 stalemate in game two broke in the visitor's favor with a seventh-inning, bases-loaded single and a run-scoring ground out providing enough insurance to cover an eighth-inning two-out, run-batted-in (RBI) single from sophomore shortstop
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.).
Concordia College (6-9, 2-0) senior Dylan Lawrence (Queens, N.Y.) worked his way through eight hits, two walks, and two errors to hold Chestnut Hill College (4-7, 0-2) scoreless until the eighth inning of game one. Meanwhile, the Clippers grabbed the upper hand with runs in the second, 1-0, and fourth, 2-0, innings. In the Griffin eighth inning, a two-out single from senior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) cued the drama. Once on base, Craig seized the spotlight, stealing second and hustling home, 2-1, during the Clipper throw away on a single from senior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Unfortunately, the Scarlet and Gold stranded him and allowed the Concordia College to add a pair of eighth-inning tallies for the 4-1 final.
Craig (2-for-3) and Owens (2-for-4) had two hits apiece to lead Chestnut Hill College. Freshman right fielder
John Contidous (Jenkintown, Pa.) had the only extra-base hit with a ninth-inning double to the right-center gap. Junior
Matthew Kress (Lansdale, Pa.) was solid in defeat (2-1), holding the Clippers to three earned runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out seven in eight and two-thirds (8.2).
In game two, the score matched after the second, 2-2, fourth, 3-3, and sixth, 5-5, innings. Chestnut Hill College plated their first two runs on a one-out single to centerfield from sophomore third baseman
Nicholas Smalley (Blue Bell, Pa.) and a misplay by the Clipper third baseman. In the fourth inning, the Scarlet and Gold made up for the third Concordia College run with a two-out single up the middle from freshman designated hitter
Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.). Then in the sixth inning, it was a Contidous lead-off triple and a grounder to short from senior center fielder
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) that evened the spread. But, the Clippers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning and netted the two runs necessary to outlast the Griffins' eight-inning rally.
Junior catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) (2-for-5) was the only Griffins to record multiple hits. He singled in both the second and third innings, scoring his run on the Clipper error in the second inning. Junior
Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman
Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) (0-1) combined to allow six runs on 11 hits and five walks. Cattai took no decision, while striking out six in five innings.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team breaks from their CACC schedule to visit The Lincoln University for a 3:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, March 21.
