Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (3/31/2018) – At Latshaw-McCarthy Field for the first time this season, Chestnut Hill College hosted the University of the Sciences (USciences) for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader today. Freshman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) plated the winning run in both 5-3 finals, plating game one winner with a seventh-inning, pinch-hit double and the game two winner with a two-run, sixth-inning single to left field. Dietz was 3-for-5 with 3 runs-batted-in (RBI) in the twin bill, helping freshman Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) (2-1) earn the first two wins of his collegiate career.

Chestnut Hill College (7-9, 3-3) scored in their first at-bat of the doubleheader, using a leadoff double from sophomore second baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) and back-to-back walks to sophomore designated hitter Erving Nazario (Hamilton, N.J.) and senior shortstop Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) to load the bases for senior first baseman Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Owens sent a ball deep enough to right field for Uzzell to score, 1-0, and an out later junior catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) doubled home Nazario for the second Scarlet and Gold run, 2-0. USciences (4-11, 1-3) answered with runs in the fourth, 2-1, and fifth, 2-2, innings, before taking the lead in the sixth, 3-2. In the seventh, a one-out single to center field from senior center fielder Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) and an error by the Devil shortstop put two runners aboard for Dietz's pinch-hit double. Only the first scored, 3-3, but the second was not far behind as freshman right fielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) hustled home on a wild pitch just moments later, 4-3. Chestnut Hill College added their fifth run with an eighth-inning double steal that ushered Owens home, 5-3.

Uzzell was the only Griffin with multiple hits (2-for-4). Freshman Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, Pa.) limited the Devils to three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three in the opening six innings, but Bethel collected the win with three innings of scoreless relief. He allowed three hits and walk one, while striking out three.

USciences put the first runs on the scoreboard in game two with a two-out, two-run double, 2-0. Chestnut Hill College evened the score in the fourth inning, 2-2, scoring on a one-out, RBI-single from Gilham and a sacrifice fly from junior left fielder Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.). The Devils took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning, 3-2, only for the Scarlet and Gold to win the affair with three sixth-inning runs, 5-3. A leadoff single from Gilham began the at-bat. It was followed by a sacrifice bunt, a walk, and a run-scoring single by Contoudis, 3-3, a strikeout, and a two-run, two-out Dietz single to left field.

Gilham was 3-for-3, while Dietz (2-for-4) and Contoudis (2-for-3) recorded two hits apiece. Senior Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) allowed three runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out five in the first five innings. Bethel collected the win while allowing just one hit in the final two Devil at-bats.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team continues their CACC schedule on Monday, April 2, when they visit Post University for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
