Box Score Miami Shores, Fla. - (3/5/2018) – In the first of two games at Barry University, junior left fielder
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.) continued to carry a hot bat as he went 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs-batted-in (RBI) during Chestnut Hill College's 10-4 win over Stonehill College. Sophomore second baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), senior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), and junior catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) also enjoyed multiple-hit performances, while sophomore pitcher
Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) collected the win (1-0) with a pair of strikeouts in seven innings.
Uzzell led the bottom of the first inning off with a single and two walks later Chestnut Hill College (2-2) had the bases loaded for Gilham. He plated Uzzell with the first of two sacrifice flies, 1-0, but nothing more came of the scoring opportunity as a Small grounder back to the pitcher ended the frame. It was Small's only out of the affair, as he singled in the Griffins' first run of a three-run fourth inning. Additional Scarlet and Gold tallies followed on a beaning of senior third baseman
Evan Grimes (Norristown, Pa.) and a sacrifice fly from junior right fielder
David McBrearty (Sicklerville, N.J.) that gave Chestnut Hill College a 4-2 lead after a two-run Stonehill College (4-2) third inning. A one-out Small double in the fifth inning gave the Griffins a 5-2 lead that expanded to 7-3 with a pair of seventh-inning scores; Craig's lead-off double produced the first on Gilham's second sacrifice fly and later a double from junior centerfielder
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) plated another. The Skyhawks scored once more in the top of the eighth inning, 7-4, but Chestnut Hill College reciprocated with three runs in the bottom of the frame to push the final score to 10-4.
Gilham knocked in three runs in all, his third coming off an eighth-inning fielder's choice. Small plated two runs with his fourth-inning single and his fifth-inning double. Additional RBI were recorded by Craig, Szumigala, Grimes, and McBrearty. Freshman pitcher
Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) relieved Cattai and held the Skyhawks to one run on three hits in the final two frames.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team returns to Barry University tomorrow, Tuesday, March 6, to face the hosting Buccaneers in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
