Box Score Miami Shores, Fla. - (3/6/2018) – A seven-run second inning haunted Chestnut Hill College the rest of the way in tonight's contest at Barry University as a first-inning home run from senior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), a fourth-inning single from junior left fielder
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), an eighth-inning home run from senior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), and a ninth-inning home run from junior right fielder
David McBrearty (Sicklerville, N.J.) only netted four runs in an eventual 10-4 Buccaneer win.
With two out in the first inning, Craig took his second 0-2 pitch over the centerfield fence, 1-0. But the Chestnut Hill College (2-3) advantage was short-lived as Barry University (6-11) used a pair of second-inning singles, a pair of bases-loaded walks, and a grand slam from senior centerfielder Jonathan Quintana (Miami Lakes, Fla.) to generate seven runs, 7-1. Small's fourth-inning single scored Craig, who led off the at-bat with a single through the right side; he stole second and advanced to third on a fly out to centerfield before crossing, 7-2. But the Buccaneers got the run back in the bottom of the frame, 8-2, and added one in both the sixth, 9-2, and seventh innings, 10-2, to diminish Owens' and McBrearty's solo shots, 10-4.
Craig, Small, McBrearty, and sophomore second baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) recorded two hits apiece. Craig was the only Griffin to score twice and he also finished with two stolen bases. After the second inning, the Scarlet and Gold bullpen combined to hold the Buccaneers to three runs – two earned – on seven hits and three walks, while striking out five.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team takes a day off before meeting Florida National University at Santaluces Community High School on Thursday, March 8, for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
