Bats Support Bethel’s Fifth Win In CACC Split with Goldey-Beacom College

Billy Bethel
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (4/24/2018) – A disastrous fifth inning decided the opener in Goldey-Beacom College's favor, 5-1, but Chestnut Hill College got revenge in the nightcap, scoring consistently in an 11-4 triumph that spilt today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. Senior shortstop Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) was the only Griffin with multiple hits (2-for-4) in game one and he scored twice in game two, but freshman right fielder Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) went 3-for-3, while freshman centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) and senior left fielder Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) each knocked in two runs to help freshman Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) (5-2) to the complete-game victory.

Chestnut Hill College (17-19, 13-13) scored in their first at-bat of the twin bill, using a leadoff single from sophomore second baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.), a one-out Craig single, and a foul fly off the bat of junior catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) to grab the early edge, 1-0. Goldey-Beacom College (16-26-1, 14-14) tied the contest up with a run in the fourth inning, 1-1, but separated from the Scarlet and Gold in the fifth inning with four runs on two hits and two errors, 5-1. Freshman Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) was stellar in relief, holding the Lightning scoreless over the final five frames. He gave up one hit and struck out five.

Uzzell led off the Griffins' first at-bat of game two with a single as well. He was able to reach second base on a fumble by the Lightning left fielder and scored just two batters later, after a wild pitch and a Craig ground out to second base, 1-0. A two-out, two run single from Isaac improved the Chestnut Hill College advantage to 3-0 in the second inning and in the third inning it was a two-out, two-run single from Contoudis that gave the Griffins a 5-2 edge. Goldey-Beacom College retaliated once more with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, 5-4, but they would get no closer as the Scarlet and Gold added a run to their lead in the bottom of the frame, 6-4, and scored five times in the sixth inning to all but cement the win, 11-4. Bethel earned his fifth win (5-2) of the season; he allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out nine.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball continues their CACC schedule on Friday, April 27, when they visit the University of the Sciences (USciences) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
