Box Score 2 Waterbury, Conn. – (5/1/2018) – The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular season came to a close tonight for Chestnut Hill College, who visited North Division leader Post University for a twin bill. The Scarlet and Gold dominated the opener, using multiple hit performances from senior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) (2-for-4), junior catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) (2-for-5), freshman right fielder
Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) (2-for-3), and sophomore catcher
Thomas Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) (2-for-4) to bury the Eagles by a 16-5 final. Unfortunately, the home team got revenge in the nightcap, 5-3, tempering the Griffin bats to spoil a record, 14–strikeout performance from freshman
Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.).
Chestnut Hill College (22-20, 18-14) set the tone for game one with four runs in their first at-bat of the evening. A two-out walk to Craig triggered the Scarlet and Gold offense. He stole second base before Gilham walked and stole third base afterwards, but both Griffins scored on the ensuing single from senior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and throwing error by the Post University (27-19, 19-11) pitcher, 2-0. A single from freshman third baseman
Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored Chestnut Hill College's third run of the inning, 3-0, and another Eagle error permitted a fourth score, 4-0. Post University got a run back in the bottom of the second inning, 4-1, but the tally was overshadowed by a Griffin run in the fourth inning, 5-1, four Scarlet and Gold tallies in the fifth inning, 9-1, and another Chestnut Hill College score in the seventh inning, 10-1. The Griffins outscored the Eagles 6-4 in the final two frames to deliver the 16-5 final. Craig and Gilham each platted two runs with their two hits, while Spratt knocked in three runs with a fourth-inning double and a two-out, fifth-inning single. Freshman
Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) and sophomore
Jerry Mangan (Wayne, Pa.) were the benefactors of the offensive outburst; the former earned his sixth win (6-2) of the season, allowing one run on four hits and a walk, while the latter recorded his first save (1) with four innings of relief. They combined to strike out seven Eagles in the affair.
Runs were harder to come by in game two as third-inning wild pitch and a bunch of fifth inning walks netted the Griffins a narrow 3-2 advantage. Unfortunately, Post University scored three late tallies to steal the 5-3 win. Barletta led off the Chestnut Hill College third inning with a double to left field. It was followed by a sacrifice from senior right fielder
Evan Grimes (Norristown, Pa.) and an Eagle wild pitch, 1-0. Post University tied the contest in the fourth inning, 1-1. In the top of the fifth inning, a leadoff walk to Healey, a wild pitch, a walk to Barletta, and a one-out walk to senior left fielder
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) loaded the bases for sophomore second baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.). He singled in the first Griffin run, 2-1, and the second scored on two-out walk to Craig, 3-1. Unfortunately, the Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the frame, 3-2, and overcame the Scarlet and Gold with three runs in the seventh inning, 5-3. Hughes provided a quality start, receiving no decision despite holding Post University to one earned run on one hit and three walks. He struck out an all-time high, 14 in just six innings.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team concludes their 2018 CACC schedule with a program-best 18 league wins and a third place ranking in the South Division. They conclude their regular season schedule tomorrow, Wednesday, May 2, with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game versus Kutztown University.
