Box Score Norristown, Pa. – (5/2/2018) – A six-run first inning did more than enough damage to earn Chestnut Hill College a 13-5 victory in tonight's regular season finale versus Kutztown University. Three Griffins drove in two runs, one of which was sophomore second baseman
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) who went 3-for-6 and batted twice in the first inning, knocking in two runs in his second at-bat of the frame. Junior
Matthew Kress (Lansdale, Pa.) earned the win (6-3) with a perfect second inning.
Kutztown University (19-18) started the affair with a first-pitch home run, 1-0, but the tally was quickly overshadowed by a six-run first at-bat for Chestnut Hill College (23-20). Uzzell led off the bottom of the first inning with a single up the middle, he advanced to second base on a one-out wild pitch, which was followed by a walk to senior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) – marking his 50
th consecutive contest reaching base – a double steal, and a passed ball-walk to junior designated hitter
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.), which scored the Griffins' first run, 1-1. Senior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) drew a third consecutive walk from the Golden Bear starter to force home the next, 2-1. After that, a pair of base hits and two more free passes brought the Scarlet and Gold advantage to 6-1. Chestnut Hill College later added to their lead with three runs in the second inning, 9-1, a run in the third inning, 10-1, providing plenty of support for a collective bullpen effort that surrendered three runs on nine hits and two walks over the remaining six frames.
Uzzell scored two runs and knocked in two more in his three-hit performance. He also stole two bases. Craig was 2-for-3 with, two walks, three runs scored, and a run-batted-in (RBI). Eight others recorded a hit; Gilham highlighted the group with three runs and an RBI. Kress, freshman
Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.), and junior
Anthony Vlahovic (New Hope, Pa.) failed to surrender an earned run in seven innings of relief.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team concludes the 2018 regular season at 23-20 and awaits seeding for the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), which begins with Opening Round play on Saturday, May 5.
