On Saturday, April 14, Chestnut Hill College (23-20, 18-14) entertained all those in attendance at Latshaw-McCarthy Field with two thrilling comeback wins over the defending CACC champions from Dominican College. With Magisterial District Judge Gregory L. Scott, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Legislative Affairs Manager Rochelle Culbreath, and members of the Norristown Police Department on hand for today's Law Enforcement Appreciation and Alumni Day, the Griffins used a two-run seventh inning and a four-run eighth inning to cement a 9-6 comeback in the opener, then walked off with game two thanks to a clutch 10th-inning double from senior first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.), 12-11.
Dominican College (19-30, 17-15) took the initial lead in both games of the doubleheader. In game one, both sides scored a run in the first, 1-1, and fourth, 2-2, innings, but the visitors won the sixth inning to hold a 4-3 advantage over the Griffins. In the latter frames, the Griffins overcame the Chargers with two runs in the seventh inning, 5-3, and four runs in the eighth inning, 9-3, allowing freshman
Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) (6-2) to earn his fourth win of the season with four innings of solid relief. Meanwhile the heart of the order – senior shortstop
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), junior catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J), and Owens – combined to go 9-for-13 with five runs scored and five runs-batted-in (RBI).
Offense dominated the start of game two as Dominican College outhit the Griffins to a 9-4, third-inning spread. But Chestnut Hill College chipped away at the deficit thanks to the play of senior left fielder
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Gilham, who both recorded RBI doubles in the fourth inning, 9-6, and produced a sixth inning run with to trim the difference to two runs, 9-7, heading to the latter frames. In the ninth inning, the Chargers briefly extended their lead to 10-7, before a three-run Griffin at-bat forced extra innings. Gilham walked to lead off the ninth inning, Owens followed with a single through the left side, a botched fielder's choice at second base then brought Gilham home, 10-8, before sacrifice flies from junior pinch hitter
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.) and freshman right fielder
Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) tied the affair, 10-10. In the 10th, Dominican College applied the pressure with a run, 11-10, but in the bottom of the extra frame the Scarlet and Gold rose to the occasion with Craig and Gilham drawing leadoff walks before Owens belted the walk-off double down the right field line, 12-11. Gilham was 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI, while Owens was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Sophomore
Jerry Mangan (Wayne, Pa.) (1-2) kept Chestnut Hill College in the affair and earned the win with six innings of brilliant relief; he held the Chargers to two runs - one earned – on five hits, while striking out five.
