Griffins Garner #5 Seed for 2019 CACC Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament

2019 CACC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament
New Haven, Conn. - (10/21/2019) – With Saturday's 5-1 victory over Wilmington University, Chestnut Hill College has secured the #5 seed in the upcoming 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. The playoff positioning sends the Griffins to Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center on Tuesday, October 22, for a 12:30 p.m. quarterfinal versus #4 Jefferson. The second CACC Women's Tennis Quarterfinal will take place on the same day at the University of Pennyslvania's Hamlin Tennis Center, where #3 the University of the Sciences (USceinces) will host #6 Post University in a 6:00 p.m. match. Winners from Tuesday's quarterfinals will advance to semifinal competition, which is scheduled for Friday, October 25, at Post University.
 
Chestnut Hill College (6-6, 5-4) and Jefferson (8-6, 6-3) met at the Campus Courts on Tuesday, October 1. The decision came down to number two singles as Chestnut Hill College rallied from a 3-1 deficit with back-to-back victories from senior Mia Covic (Novi Sad, Serbia) (W, 6-3, 6-0 @ #1) and freshman Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) (W, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 @ #3); 3-3. At number two singles, senior Barbara Broville (Toulouse, France) evened the score with a 7-6 (5) triumph in her second set versus senior Chang Wei (Guangzhou, China). Unfortunately, Wei won the tiebreaker by a 6-3 measure, securing the league-match for the Lady Rams; 4-3.
 
The Rams won number one doubles (6-3) and number two doubles (6-4) to earn the team point, before senior Nicole Yang (Blue Bell, Pa.) and junior Mariana Sanchez (Trenton, N.J.) were able to win number three doubles by a 7-5 score. Jefferson added to their 1-0 lead with an opening 6-0, 6-0, win at number four singles; 2-0. The Scarlet and Gold got on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-1, number five singles win from sophomore Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.); 2-1, but Jefferson regained their two-point advantage, 3-1, with a 6-0, 6-3, decision at number six singles. Chestnut Hill College began their revival with Covic's solid 6-3, 6-0, win at number one singles (3-2) and continued it with Garcia Arguelles' 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, comeback win at number three singles (3-3), but could not sustain the effort with Broville's loss in the second flight; 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.
 
This is Chestnut Hill College's first CACC postseason appearance since the 2015-2016 season and therefore, their first under Head Coach Alan Garabedian.
