Covic and Broville Lead Griffins’ Journey Back to CACC Postseason; Women’s Tennis Season Preview

Chestnut Hill College Women's Tennis 2019-2020
Philadelphia, Pa. - (9/6/2019) – "We are looking to improve as always. Our ultimate goal is to reach the conference postseason," proclaimed Head Coach Alan Garabedian. "We will have a stronger singles lineup. I expect Mia (Covic) and Barbara (Broville) to really use their experience and earn us some points in the top flights. If we can crack the CACC's (Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) top-six, who knows where it could go from there."

In their first year under Coach Garabedian, Chestnut Hill College enjoyed CACC wins over Caldwell University (W, 7-0 on October 2, 2018) and Holy Family University (W, 7-0 on October 6, 2018) en route to a 2-11 overall finish (2-6 CACC). Senior Mia Covic (Novi Sad, Serbia) finished the season with a 5-7 number one singles record – sporting a 6-8 overall individual record with her 1-1 performance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships - and combined with teammates – senior Barbara Broville (Toulouse, France) (4-4) and Daniela Siqueira '19 (2-3) – for a 6-7 record at number one doubles (6-8 overall). Broville offered the team's best singles record at 8-8; she was 5-7 in the second flight, 1-0 in the third flight, and 2-1 in tournament play.

"I have seen a lot of improvement from our other returners as well," mentioned Coach Garabedian. "Their growth will be critical in doubles play as we test out some new combinations and jell together this season." In addition to Covic and Broville, Chestnut Hill College returns fellow senior Nicole Yang (Blue Bell, Pa.), junior Mariana Sanchez (Trenton, N.J.), and sophomore Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.). Sanchez earned the 2018-2019 Women's Tennis Coaches Award for her intangible contributions to the team's success. She finished her sophomore season with a 1-5 singles record – playing primarily in the third individual flight (1-4) - and a 2-5 number three doubles record alongside Vassalluzzo (1-2) and Yang (1-3).

The lone addition for the Scarlet and Gold in 2019-2020 is freshman Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain). "Carlota has good experience coming into her collegiate career. Her serve will prove valuable throughout. I expect her to make a big impact for us in both singles and doubles," assessed Coach Garabedian.

The Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team opens their 2019-2020 season on Sunday, September 8, when they host Le Moyne College in a 1:00 p.m. home opener.
