Chestnut Hill College Men's Tennis Team member Joao Sousa has once again been named to the 2022-23 PhillySIDA Academic All Area Men's Tennis Team.  Sousa is one of just six student-athletes that were selected to the team.  The PhillySIDA men's tennis team is voted on by the sports information offices of 30 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Sousa is one of just three repeat honorees on this year's team and is  also the school's first repeat honoree since Stephanie Brogna was name to the Academic All-Area women's At-large time three times from 2017-2020

In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area, an athlete must at least be in his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better. A student in graduate school must have at least a 3.30 grade point average in both undergraduate and graduate school (if not in first semester of graduate program).

Sousa is just the second Chestnut Hill College men's tennis player to earn academic all-area honors, joining Jesus Darias who was recognized in the 2019-20 season. He is also the 11th Chestnut Hill College student-athlete to earn academic all-area honors during the 2022-23 academic year.

In April at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament banquet, Sousa, who has a dual major in business administration and management and accounting, was named the winner of the CACC Top XVII Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest gpa competing at the conference championship tournament.  He has earned Dean's List and Chestnut Hill Athletic Academic Honor Roll accolades in every semester since enrolling at Chestnut Hill in the fall of 2020.  Last season, Sousa was a D2 Athletic Director's Association (D2ADA) Academic Achievement Award Winner

As the spring semester drew to a close, Sousa was inducted into Sigma Beta Delta, the Business Honor Society and Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Athlete Honor Society.  He was also awarded the Sigma Beta Delta Award of Excellence.

This season, Sousa recorded a 13-7 record in singles play, including a 6-2 mark in conference matches.  He also had a 13-9 record in doubles matches during the season.  He is a two-time all-CACC honoree, earning second team honors as a freshman in 2021 and first team honors as a sophomore in 2022.

The men's tennis team finished their 2022-23 campaign with a 14-9 record, reaching the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship match for the second consecutive year. Sousa earned All-Tournament honors in each of the past two seasons.

Joining Sousa on the PhillySIDA academic All Area team are Kevin Zhu and Edoardo Graziani from the University of Pennsylvania; Thibault Frumholz of Temple University, and Hannibal Borg and German Lopez Andujar of Thomas Jefferson University.  Frumholz and Borg are repeat honorees from 2022.  Zhu was named the PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Men's Tennis Performer of the Year.
