Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/9/2014) – On Friday, September 26, members of the Chestnut Hill men's basketball team and coaching staff took time away from their busy schedules to speak with children at Kenderton School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on important topics like staying in school, getting good grades, listening to their teachers, and college.
The Griffins took a short drive to Kenderton School where they met with classes from kindergarten to second grade. Sophomore guard
Billy Cassidy (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior guard
Ryan Griffin (West Friendship, Md.), and senior forward
Filip Sekulic (Danilovgrad, Montenegro) were some of the crowd favorites and all agreed that the opportunity to talk to young kids in the community was equally exciting for the players.
"The visit to the school was awesome," Cassidy said. "Our team enjoyed spending time with the kids and we felt that if we can help the students with some work then everyone wins. It's important for young students to see college student-athletes because we can serve as an example and give them the hope and guidance to put them on a similar path." He continued, "The most important idea we shared with the students was that if you take care of all your responsibilities, on and off the court, then you will succeed at the highest level."
"It was a great experience," Sekulic said. "I loved it because I remember how I always looked up to someone older than me when I was their age. Knowing that every little thing we do with them has the possibility to make a difference in their lives is a great thing."
In addition to speaking to the children, the Griffin players also ate lunch and had recess with the students. "The team's favorite part was putting a smile on every kids face and just living in the moment!" Cassidy said.
The Griffins will continue their community service with Kenderton School throughout the year with basketball clinics, games, and also a luncheon.
