Scoreless Streak Secures CACC Pitcher of the Week Award for Winterstein
New Haven, Conn. – (4/15/2013) – Improving upon an already impressive spring, graduate pitcher
Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Pitcher of the Week award after totaling seven more scoreless innings in four appearances during Chestnut Hill College’s 2-2 week. Winterstein struck out six while allowing only one hit over four scoreless innings at Concordia College (NY) on Wednesday, April 10. He then collected two saves in three innings of work in the Griffins victories over Nyack College on Saturday, April 13.
Amidst a pitcher's duel each side manufactured a run before a seventh inning homer provided Concordia College (NY) a 2-1 win in the opener of the CACC doubleheader with Chestnut Hill College (13-19, 6-8). Sophomore pitcher
Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) held up his end of the show until the sixth inning, giving way to Winterstein after allowing the Clippers to take a 2-1 lead on a lead-off homerun. Winterstein ensured the Clippers did not stray far with 1.2 inning of scoreless work; unfortunately, the Clipper hurler went the distance, allowing one run on five hits and a walk. The Clippers defeated the Griffins in game two of the CACC double header as well, edging out the Griffins, 6-4, despite Winterstein permitting only one hit in the final 2.1 innings.
The Griffins evened up for the week with two weekend wins over Nyack College. Allowing the Warriors only seven hits in the twin bill, senior pitcher
Robert Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman pitcher
Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) rendered the Nyack College bats useless. In support of Hopkins, junior center fielder
Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled home the winning run in the seventh inning of the opener, 3-2, while in game two Crim and Winterstein
combined for a two-hit shutout, 3-0. Winterstein collected a save in each contest, allowing only a walk while striking out three over three innings.
Winterstein currently leads the CACC in earned-run average, pacing the league with a paper-thin 0.61 allowance. He has posted a 2-1 record and earned three saves buy allowing two earned runs on 16 hits and eight walks. Winterstein has struck out 23 and held opponents to a .167 batting average over 29.1 innings of work.
The baseball team continues their CACC schedule at Latshaw-McCarthy Field on Tuesday, April 16, with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against the University of the Sciences.
