Slugging Secures Soller A Spot On CACC Softball Honor Roll

New Haven, Conn. – (5/1/2013) – Making her first appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Softball Report, freshman third baseman Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) earned a mention on the league’s Honor Roll with a .583 (7-for-12) batting average and seven runs-batted-in (RBI) during Chestnut Hill College’s 0-4 week.

The 2013 season came to a close for the Chestnut Hill College (11-27, 8-18) softball team with last week's doubleheaders versus Mercy College, on Thursday, April 25, and at Dominican College, on Saturday, April 27. Against Mercy College, the Griffins put the afternoon's first three runs on the scoreboard during the first inning. Junior left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, Fla.) led off the afternoon with a single through the left side. She reached second base, avoiding a dropped tag, while freshman center fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) took first base on the fielder's choice. A grounder to shortstop advanced the Griffin runners, who both scored after another grounder to shortstop, 1-0, a beam ball, and a Soller single to left field, 2-0. The Griffins platted one more before the end of the frame, but the Mavericks erased the home advantage by the third inning, 4-3, before scoring seven late runs en route to an 11-4 win in the opener. The Mavericks took game two as well, clinching a 4-0 pitcher's duel with three late runs. Soller went 2-for-3 in the contest, recording half of the Griffins hits.

The Griffins jumped on the Lady Chargers in the opener; using a commanding start from freshman pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) to build a 3-0 advantage with a Soller second-inning homer, 1-0, two third-inning Lady Charger errors, 2-0, and a lead-off fourth-inning homerun from freshman second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J), 3-0. A fifth-inning homerun from Dayter briefly extended the Griffins advantage to 4-0. But in the bottom of the frame the Lady Chargers platted seven runs with seven hits, including two two-run homeruns and a two-run double, to steal the opener, 7-4. After the Lady Chargers turned it on late in game one, it was the Griffins who hoped to score late in game two. The home team built an 8-0 advantage over their first four at-bats leaving Soller’s fifth-inning tally as the only blemish on the shutout. Soller went 2-for-3 in the opener and served as the run in game two, hustling home on a grounder first base after leading off the inning by reaching base on a dropped third strike.

Soller finished her rookie season as the team leader in homeruns (4) and slugging (.515). She carried a .279 (19-for-68) batting average and provided eight RBI.
