Barboza’s Second Game-Winner Warrants CACC’s Weekly Rookie Award, Amaya Makes Honor Roll

New Haven, Conn. - (10/28/2014) – With plenty at stake in last Wednesday’s rain-soaked contest at Victory Field #1, Chestnut Hill College rallied for a 2-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College on the strength of second-half strikes by junior Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) (45:50, 1-1) and freshman Diogo Barboza (Estoril, Portugal) (69:23, 2-1). Barboza’s game-winner earned him the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week award while Amaya was recognized on the league’s Weekly Honor Roll.

Goldey-Beacom College (7-8, 5-4) was the aggressor early on, recording a 6-1 shot advantage in the first half; the only opportunity for Chestnut Hill College (8-7-1, 7-3-1) in the opening period was a blast from junior captain Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) that stung the palms of Lightning goalkeeper Marcus Arrvidsson (Taby, Sweden). The visitors broke through in the 36th minute, when freshman forward Omar Hernandez (West Grove, Pa.) rocketed a 35-yard shot over the head of Griffin goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) and into the upper right corner of the net, 1-0 (35:17).

The Griffins came out of intermission reinvigorated, and their early attacking paid dividends less than a minute after the break. Amaya took a pass from senior midfielder Michael Hester (Seaford, N.Y.) in the box and sent a left-footed shot into the back of the net for his team-leading ninth goal of the season, 1-1 (45:50). The game remained on level terms until the 70th minute, when Amaya took aim on a free kick just outside the box. His low shot was parried by the Lightning goalkeeper, but Barboza was right there to deposit the rebound for his second goal of the year, 2-1 (69:23), both of which have come in game-winning fashion. The freshman netted the difference maker in a 2-1 win at Wilmington University on Wednesday, September 24.

The streaking Griffins established a new program record with their fourth straight CACC triumph. Unfortunately, it ended three days later, on Saturday, October 25, in a 5-0 loss to Bloomfield College.

The men’s soccer team heads across town on Tuesday, October 28, for its CACC finale, a critical 2:30 p.m. showdown with intra-city rival Philadelphia University.
