Dayter’s Gem Nets CACC Laurel

New Haven, Conn. - (3/24/2015) – Despite taking a hard-luck loss in the Chestnut Hill College softball team’s return from a three-week layoff, senior pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) collected an Honor Roll mention on the latest installment of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report. Dayter was locked in on the mound during the nightcap of a conference twin bill at Wilmington University (Del.) on Wednesday, March 18, giving up just one unearned run and three hits over six sparkling innings of a pitchers’ duel that ended in a 1-0 Wildcats triumph.

After a long break from competition, Chestnut Hill College headed down Interstate 95 for an afternoon CACC doubleheader at Wilmington University. Down to their last out in the league opener for both sides, the Griffins knotted the game on a three-run home run from junior designated player Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.) before finally giving way to the Wildcats in extra innings, 8-7 (eight innings). Dayter scored the team’s first run in the opener, coming around on a game-tying RBI double by junior left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontatio, Calif.) in the top of the third inning, 1-1.

Game two was a low-scoring affair, with Dayter battling her Wildcat counterpart to an unfortunate 1-0 defeat. Wilmington University did its damage in the second inning, scoring after a one-out dropped third strike and back-to-back singles, 1-0. The Griffins did not reach second base until the sixth inning when sophomore designated player Jenna Long (North Wildwood, N.J.) led off with a single to deep short and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice. The Griffins then pinch-ran freshman Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.) in anticipation, but the opportunity was lost with Carney striking out and junior catcher Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) popping out to short for the inning's final two outs.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Botsch (Smyrna, Del.) then collected the Griffins' final three outs after surrendering a seventh-inning single as she struck out eight Griffins and allowed five hits in her fourth win of the season (4-4). Unfortunately, Dayter took the loss (0-3) despite not allowing an earned run in a three-hit performance (6.0IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K).
The softball team continues its season this afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader at West Chester University.
