Career Games Earn Evans CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition
New Haven, Conn. - (12/5/2016) – Junior center Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) scored a career-high 23 points twice last week, helping Chestnut Hill College to a 2-1 week of competition at Coppin State University, Holy Family University, and Roberts Wesleyan College. The Griffins went 2-1 on the road trip, receiving 18.7 points-per-game (PPG) 13 rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal from Evans. For his effort, Evans was recognized on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.
Placing all five starters in double figures on Monday, November 28, Chestnut Hill College used an early first-half run, led by sophomores Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Dakpe Yiljep (Samaru-Zaria, Nigeria), to gain the separation necessary to secure a 76-73 victory at, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I member, Coppin State University. The aggression earned the Griffins a 40-33 halftime lead, which they eventually reestablished at 68-58, before withstanding the Eagles late-game rally. An extra bucket and a 24-of-32 (75.0%) effort from the charity stripe accounted for the Chestnut Hill College favor in the contest. Isaac was the top contributor, hitting all eight (8-of-8) of his free throws in an 18-point effort that came with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Yiljep offered a team-high nine rebounds and three steals in addition to his 17 points. Sophomore guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) (13 points), junior forward Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) (11), and Evans (10) were the other three Griffin starters in double figures.
Wednesday night’s contest at Holy Family University marked a return to CACC play for Chestnut Hill College, who received a career-night from Evans, but fell short of the Tigers in an 83-82 overtime final. Awl put back his own miss to force the extra frame, 78-78 (0:14), there he gave the Griffins a late lead, 82-81 (0:21), before a last-second layup pushed the decision in the home team's favor. Evans hit 10-of-18 (.556) from the floor and 3-of-6 (.500) from the free throw line for a career-high 23 points. He also offered a career-high seven rebounds, an assist, and a block.
Leading most of the way, and by as many as a dozen (12) points (64-52) midway through the second half (10:47), Chestnut Hill College still required a last-second (0:03) Isaac jumper to preserve an 82-80 victory at Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon. Evans scored a team-leading 23 points as he showcased his range with three, three-point baskets (3-of-4, .750) to match his recently established career-high. He hit 10-of-14 (.714) from the floor and complimented his scoring with six rebounds and a steal.
The Chestnut Hill College men’s basketball team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Tuesday, December 6, when they visit Goldey-Beacom College for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
