Glenn and Trossi Respectively Earn CACC Rookie and Co-Defensive Player of the Week Awards
New Haven, Conn. - (2/13/2017) – Fresh off a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victories over Georgian Court University, 92-78 on February 7, and Concordia College (NY), 89-72 on February 11, the Chestnut Hill College women’s basketball team offered two honorees to the most recent edition of the league’s weekly report. For the third time in four weeks, freshman forward Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) was recognized as the CACC Rookie of the Week while sophomore guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) shared the CACC Defensive Player of the Week award with Clipper junior forward Hadiyah Black (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Glenn averaged 19.0 points-per-game (PPG) and 5.0 rebounds-per-game (RPG) while also recording an assist, a block, and two steals. Meanwhile, Trossi totaled 10 steals between the two contests; in addition to recording her second collegiate triple-double versus Georgian Court University (11 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists), she averaged 13.0 PPG, 10.0 RPG, and 8.0 assists-per-game.
Chestnut Hill College (15-8, 10-6) was stalled off the tip of Tuesday evening's CACC contest, but by the seven-minute mark (7:11) of the first quarter the Griffins overcame Georgian Court University (3-20, 1-15), 8-7, on a jumper from senior forward Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.). From there the Scarlet and Gold never looked back, leading 26-19 at the end of the opening frame, 50-37 at halftime, and 92-78 by game's conclusion. Kuhnen (14 points) was one of six Griffins in double figures; a group that was led by junior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) in points – with 19 – but led in direction by Trossi who offered her second triple-double of the season.
Trossi, who recorded the first women's basketball triple-double in Chestnut Hill College and CACC history in a 94-92 overtime victory over Kutztown University on December 17 (17 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists), pulled off the feat in regulation this time. She was an efficient scorer, totaling her 11 points on 4-of-7 (.571) shooting and a 3-of-4 (.750) performance at the free throw line. She grabbed seven of her 10 rebounds on the defensive end and made three steals to keep the Chestnut Hill College offense on the fastbreak. Her generosity helped put five others in double figures. Glenn was one of them as she scored 18 points in excess of six rebounds and two steals.
Kuhnen poured in 24 points on 4-of-6 (66.7%) shooting from three-point range, to lead Chestnut Hill College past Concordia College, 89-72, in Saturday’s CACC action. Combined with an always potent offense, the Griffin defense rose to the occasion, scoring 34 points off of 25 Clipper turnovers (16 steals). Glenn finished with 20 points, four rebounds, an assist, and a block off the bench, while Trossi neared a triple-double once again with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.
Following an emotional Senior Day ceremony, Concordia College (7-17, 7-9) raced out of the gate, scoring the first seven points of the contest to take a 7-0 lead at the 7:48 mark of the first quarter. Still, they trailed the visitors 25-23 heading into the second stanza. Fortunately, Chestnut Hill College won the see-saw battle in that frame, closing the quarter with a 7-0 run of their own to hold a 43-37 halftime edge. The deficit held at four points, 65-61, at the conclusion of the third quarter, but the fourth quarter separated the CACC rivals for good as the Griffins outscored the Clippers 28-7 en route to a 17-point, 89-72, triumph.
Chestnut Hill College continues CACC play on Wednesday, February 15, when they travel to Wilmington University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
