Griffins Have Rough First Day At West Chester University Tournament

West Chester, PA – (9/11/2009) – In their first day of play at the West Chester University Tournament, the Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team faced the hosting Golden Rams and Daemen College. The Griffins opened the afternoon with West Chester University; the Golden Rams handled match to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-4) victory. The Griffins then squared off against Daemen College. The Warriors managed to grab a 25-22 win in the first game, before closing out the Griffins 3-0 with 25-9 and 25-20 wins in the final two games.

Setters, sophomore Katherine Tohanczyn (Hatfield, PA) and freshman Courtney Gallo (Wilmington, DE ), teamed to fuel the Griffins offense this afternoon. Against West Chester University (5-1), Gallo provided five assists while Tohanczyn added six assists and two kills. Sophomore middle hitter Madison McGee (Edgewater, MD ) was the focus of the Griffins attack; she totaled three kills. Defensively, freshman libero Elisabeth DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA ) hustled to 16 digs and Tohanczyn pitched in with five digs and a block, but it was not enough to derail the Golden Rams.

Chestnut Hill College (2-5) gave Daemen College (9-4) a better match, challenging them throughout the contest. Gallo and Tohanczyn combined for 19 assists, feeding freshman outside hitter Madelynn Ries (Antananarivo, Madagascar ) for five kills. Tohanczyn killed four balls and also chipped in on defense with three digs. DiGregorio and Ries teamed to lead the defensive effort. DiGregorio totaled 13 digs and Ries blocked three balls. Freshman defensive specialist Bobbie Chukuntarod (San Francisco, CA ) added eight digs.

The women's volleyball team continues play tomorrow, Saturday, September 12, at the West Chester University Tournament. The Griffins open with a 10:00 a.m. non-conference match against Wilmington University; followed by a 12:00 p.m. match against Seton Hill College.
