Philadelphia, PA – (3/19/2010) – Chestnut Hill College looked to even up for the afternoon after scoring four runs on the first inning of game two. Unfortunately, Mercy College scored eight runs between the third and fifth inning to come from behind for the 9-5 win. The Mavericks won the first game of the doubleheader by a 5-1 final. Freshman outfielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ) led the Griffins with three hits in the twinbill.
A leadoff single from freshman centerfielder Kim Kashnoski (Philadelphia, PA) got the Griffins rolling in the first inning of game two. Another single from junior catcher Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) and a one-out walk to senior second baseman Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ) loaded the bases for Chestnut Hill College (0-10), as the Griffins plated two runs on Mercy College (6-4) a throwing error and a wild pitch before a two-run single from Schempp pushed the lead to 4-0. The Griffins added another run in the bottom of the second inning on a double to right field from freshman first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, PA). The tide turned in the top of the third when the Mavericks scored three runs on a hit and an error. They added four runs in the fourth and another in the fifth before closing out the contest 9-5. Freshman pitcher Alex Oakes (Cortlandt Manor, NY) earned the win for Mercy College. She allowed one earned run on eight hits and four walks over seven innings. Sophomore pitcher Kayla Shoap (Newville, Pa.) took the loss (0-2) for the Griffins. She surrendered eight earned runs on 13 hits and five walks over seven innings. She struck out two.
In game one, Chestnut Hill College stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 5-0. A leadoff double from Treen, and following singles from freshman pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) and junior shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Parks, PA) put the Griffins on the scoreboard, but junior pitcher Shanna Hicks (Marlboro, NY) closed the door for the Mavericks, who claimed a 5-1 win. Hicks allowed one run on four hits and two walks. She struck out two while collecting the win. Wilenta took the loss (0-4) for the Griffins. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five.
The softball team opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule at home with their next doubleheader; a 12:00 p.m. twinbill against Bloomfield College on Saturday, March 20.
