Philadelphia, PA – (3/20/2010) – The softball team hosted Bloomfield College this afternoon, as Chestnut Hill College opened their 2010 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with today's doubleheader. The Deacons scored six runs in the fourth inning of game one to collect a 7-1 victory before sweeping the day with a 12-3 win in game two. Junior shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Parks, PA) led the Griffins, knocking in two runs on a 5-for-6 afternoon.
In the opener, Bloomfield College (5-2, 2-0) scored a run in the top of the third inning, before bringing six runs across the plate in the fourth inning. Chestnut Hill College (0-12, 0-2) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. A lead-off single and stolen base from freshman right fielder Joan Quinn (Trenton, NJ) put the a runner in scoring position, before a two-out single from freshman first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, PA) brought the run home. Unfortunately, senior pitcher Briana Moore (Clifton, NJ) only allowed one Griffin aboard in the final two innings to collect the win. She allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out 12. Freshman pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) took the loss (0-5) for the Griffins. She gave up seven runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Deacons carried the momentum into the second game, as they plated six runs in their first, two at-bats. The Griffins scored a run in their first at-bat on a double from senior second baseman Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ) and they looked to rally in the fifth inning with a two-run single from Burdziak, but three Deacon runs in the top of the seventh cemented the victory, 12-3. Freshman pitcher Ashleigh Williams (Manassas, VA) collected with win for Bloomfield College. She allowed three runs on ten hits and two walks while striking out two. Sophomore pitcher Kayla Shoap (Newville, PA) took the loss (0-3) for the Griffins. She allowed nine earned runs on 16 hits and two walks. She struck out one.
The softball team visits Philadelphia University for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, March 22. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
