Winkelspecht’s Five Goals Not Enough To Help Griffins Catch Cardinals

Lafayette Hill, PA – (3/27/2010) – Chestnut Hill College scored the first, two goals of this afternoon's East Coast Conference (ECC) contest with Wheeling Jesuit University. Unfortunately, the Cardinals outscored the Griffins 14-5 over the final 54:17 to win the contest 14-7. Freshman attack Mark Winkelspecht (Laury Station, PA) led the Griffins with five goals.

 

Freshman attack Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) and Winkelspecht gave Chestnut Hill College (3-5, 0-4) a quick 2-0 advantage in the opening 5:43 of today's contest. Wheeling Jesuit University (2-4, 2-1) managed to even the game with 2:02 left in the first quarter before streaking out to a 7-2 halftime lead. The Cardinals netted the first score of the second half a minute into the third quarter, extending their lead to its largest margin, 8-2. The Griffins responded with a man-up tally, but the Cardinals outscored the Griffins 6-3 in the remaining 29 minutes to claim the 14-7 win.

 

The Cardinals were led offensively by senior midfielder John Dunbar (Eagan, MN) and senior attack Eric Jenkins (Pleasanton, CA), who totaled four points apiece. Dunbar recorded three goals and an assist while also collecting three ground balls and caused turnover. Jenkins provided two goals, two assists, and a ground ball. Freshman goalie Jim LaPenna (Bel Air, MD) collected the win with seven saves in the first half for Wheeling Jesuit University. Senior goalie Joe Sims (Dublin, OH) played the second half and made four saves.

 

Winkelspecht grabbed three ground balls and caused a turnover in addition to his five scores. Morlock recorded the other two Griffin goals. Assists were provided by freshman midfielders Junji Wiener (Houston, Texas) and Dan Bohon (Lincoln University, PA). Wiener supplied three and Bohon added two. Freshman midfielder Alex Sabia (Conshohocken, PA) secured seven ground balls and was 17-for-22 on face-offs, leading the Griffins to a dominant performance in the circle, 18-for-25. Freshman goalie Andrew D'Addona (Norristown, PA) made his first start of the season and made 15 saves, despite taking the loss (0-1).

 

The men's lacrosse team continues their ECC schedule with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Lake Erie College on Thursday, April 1.
