Lyndhurst, NJ – (4/10/2010) – Chestnut Hill College scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but it was not enough to come back from Felician College's seven-run, fourth inning, as the Golden Falcons won the opener of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, 7-3. The Golden Falcons also won game two, defeating the Griffins 9-0 in five innings.
Felician College (7-19, 2-11) broke up a scoreless game one with seven runs on seven hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Griffins went quietly in the fifth and sixth innings, but freshman right fielder Joan Quinn (Trenton, NJ) led-off the Griffins' final at-bat with a double down the left field line. Junior catcher Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) followed with a single along the same path to advance Quinn to third. Junior shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) kept the left fielder busy with a fly. The catch was botched and two Griffins scored, while Burdziak took third. Freshman left fielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ) scored the third Griffin run with a grounder to third, but next batters went in order as the rally fell short.
Senior second baseman Kaitlyn Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) singled in the third inning, freshman first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) singled in the fourth, and freshman pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Bick, NJ) did the same in the fifth but all was for not, as junior pitcher Kristina Jimenez (West Milford, NJ) completed game two with a shutout-win and eight strikeouts. Wilenta struck out six in the loss for Chestnut Hill College (2-22, 2-12).
The softball team remains on the road tomorrow, Sunday, April 11, for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
