4/11/2010 5:08:54 PM

Sparkill, NY – (4/11/2010) – The softball team visited St. Thomas Aquinas College for an afternoon doubleheader. Freshman shortstop Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) spoiled both the no-hitter and the shutout in game two with one foul swoop, but the Spartans still completed the sweep with a 6-1 win. They took the opener 6-2.

Freshman pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Bick, NJ) reached on a one-out error in the Chestnut Hill College (2-24) fifth inning of game two. Benson followed with a run-scoring single to break up the Spartan no-hitter. Unfortunately, the Spartans answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning extending their lead to 5-1. They would get one more in the sixth inning before closing out the Griffins, 6-1. Wilenta struck out three in the loss (1-10), while freshman pitcher Samantha Welsh (Stony Point, NY) fanned 12 for St. Thomas Aquinas College (4-22).

Senior catcher Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ) reached on an error with two out to keep the Griffins' first at-bat of the afternoon alive. Freshman first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) and Wilenta then ripped back-to-back singles to plate to bring the run around and deliver a 1-0 lead. The Spartans matched that run in the bottom of the frame and they scored five more runs, 6-1, before the Griffins could push another across in the top of the sixth inning. Treen set the table again in the sixth inning, this time with a one-out triple. Cavallo brought her home, but the rally would end there, 6-2.

The softball team returns home to host Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Tuesday, April 13. The opener is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
