Lafayette Hill, PA – (4/13/2010) – With 23 seconds remaining a Tiger turnover provided Chestnut Hill College with one last opportunity to tie this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's lacrosse contest. Senior midfielder Carley Glass (Swedesboro, NJ) led the final charge down the field, but the Griffins came away empty handed as Holy Family University won the contest by a 17-16 final.
Down one with 23 seconds to play, Glass hustled to an errand pass by the Holy Family University (6-5, 5-3) to secure one last possession for Chestnut Hill College (4-7, 3-5). Glass sped down the field but was unable to take the final shot as the ball found and an opportunistic Nicole Covella (Vineland, NJ), who drew the shooting foul for a free position attempt. Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, PA) denied the attempt as time expired to preserve the Tigers' win.
Combining for seven first-half goals, Carley and Maryanne Glass (Swedesboro, NJ) directed the Griffins to a 9-6 lead at intermission. Junior attack Jennifer James (Philadelphia, PA) and sophomore attack Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., NJ) powered the Tigers back in the second half. James finished with five goals and Mansi added four goals. Jenkins made nine saves and earned the win for Holy Family University.
Carley finished with seven goals and an assist while Maryanne was the playmaker for the offense with four assists in addition to her six goals. They also combined for nine ground balls, five draws, and seven caused turnovers. Covella scored twice in the second half and Kera Cathel (Burlington Twp., NJ) recorded a first-half tally. Despite taking the loss (4-7), junior goalkeeper junior Cherise Bell (Elkins Park, PA) made 14 saves.
The women's lacrosse team travels to Philadelphia University for their next CACC contest; a 4:30 p.m. contest on Thursday, April 15.
