Philadelphia, PA – (4/19/2010) – Chestnut Hill College welcomed Dominican College to the softball field this afternoon for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Lady Chargers took both games in six innings, the first 11-2 and the second 11-0. Freshman Veronica Wilenta (Bick, NJ) led the Griffins with two hits and two runs scored.
Dominican College (25-11, 15-1) held a 3-0 advantage after three innings of the opener. They made it 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning, but Chestnut Hill College (2-30, 2-18) broke the shutout with Wilenta scoring on an error by the Lady Charger first baseman. Freshman first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) led off the at-bat with a single and Wilenta replaced her at first base on a fielder's choice. Freshman pitcher Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) then singled and sophomore catcher Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) walked to load the bases. A grounder from sophomore right fielder Alyssa Miller (East Stroudsburg, PA) gave the first baseman trouble and Wilenta scored for the Griffins' first run. Wilenta would reach home again in the sixth inning, hustling home on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the Lady Chargers scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to end the contest on an 11-2 final.
The Griffins had their best chance to score in the fourth inning of game two. Senior second baseman Julie Treen (Upper Township, PA) led off the at-bat with a single to third base. Cavallo replaced her at first base on a fielder's choice and Wilenta singled to second base to put the runner in scoring position, but consecutive outs followed to end the threat. Junior shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) recorded a hit in each contest.
The softball team hosts Philadelphia University tomorrow, Tuesday, April 20, in a CACC doubleheader. Opening pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
