Griffins Sweep Warriors for First Wins of Season

4/3/2010 8:30:39 PM

Philadelphia, PA – (4/3/2010) – The softball team took two from Nyack College in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader and collected their first wins of the season, as Chestnut Hill College walked off with a 7-6, eight-inning victory in the opener before winning game two 3-1. Junior shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) and freshman first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) both totaled five hits and three runs-batted-in (RBI) in twin bill.

The Griffins held a 4-1 lead entering the sixth inning of the today's opener against Nyack College (2-17, 0-8). The Warriors scored four runs on four hits in the top of the inning, but all was not lost as the Chestnut Hill College (2-18, 2-8) pulled together for a tying run in their at-bat. A two-out single from Burdziak and a walk to freshman centerfielder Kim Kashnoski (Philadelphia, PA) set the table for senior second baseman Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ), who singled through the right side to knot the affair at 5-5. The seventh inning passed without a run from either side leading to extra innings. The Warriors put the pressure on early with a run in the top of the eighth, but doubles from Burdziak and Cavallo brought home two Griffins in the bottom of the frame to land the first victory for the home team. Burdziak was 4-for-5 with three runs and 3 RBI while freshman pitcher Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) earned her first win despite allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk. She struck out one.

The Griffins carried the momentum into the second contest scoring a run in each of their first, two at-bats, 2-0. The Warriors finally put a run across on freshman pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Bick, NJ) in the top of the fifth inning, when three consecutive, two-out singles brought home a Warrior run. However, the Griffins matched that tally in the bottom of the frame on a Treen RBI single. Wilenta held the Warriors scoreless in their final two at-bats to earn her first win of the season; she allowed one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out five.

The softball team continues their CACC schedule at the University of the Sciences with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 7.
