Softball Losses Two in Conference Doubleheader with Devils

4/8/2010 1:06:39 AM

Philadelphia, PA – (4/7/2010) – Chestnut Hill College totaled five hits in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at the University of the Sciences. The Devils took both games in five innings, winning the first 8-0 and the second, 10-0. Freshman Veronica Wilenta (Bick, NJ) recorded a hit in both games and pitched for the Griffins in game two.

Back-to-back, lead-off singles from freshman first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) and Wilenta gave Chestnut Hill College (2-20, 2-10) their best opportunity to score in the second inning of the opener. Unfortunately, freshman pitcher Courtney Spina (Thorton, PA) ended the inning without harm before collecting the win for the University of the Sciences (10-12, 8-2).  She struck out nine over her five innings.

Senior second baseman Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ) and Wilenta singled in the Griffins first, two at-bats of game two but no Griffin crossed home before the Devils posted an eight-run second inning. Junior shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) recorded the Griffins final hit of the afternoon with one out in the third inning, but the effort went fruitless as the Devils added two more runs in the bottom of the stanza.

The softball team continues their CACC schedule with a trip to Felician College on Saturday, April 10. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. opening pitch.
