Lafayette Hill, PA – (5/7/2010) – Chestnut Hill College was able to match Molloy College's first two scores of today's East Coast Conference (ECC) contest, but penalties eventually hurt the Griffin cause as the Lions were successful on 8-of-17 man-up opportunities en route to a 23-9 victory. Seven different Griffins recorded a tally in the season finale, led by freshman midfielder Junji Wiener (Houston, TX) and freshman attack Nate Tharp (Laurel, MD) who netted two goals apiece. Chestnut Hill College finishes their inaugural season at 4-11 overall and 0-10 in the ECC.
Molloy College (5-9, 4-6) owned a narrow 3-2 advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter. Tharp's first goal answered the Lions' initial charge and made the deficit 2-1 after the opening five minutes (4:58). Freshman midfielder Eric Janda (Fredericksburg, VA) tied the contest, 2-2, at 9:22, but a Lion goal at 13:43 gave the road team the edge before period's end. The penalties began to add up in the second quarter as the game became more physical. With the Griffins taking the majority of the infractions the Lions were able separate with an 11-goal period, netting them a 14-4 halftime lead. There were 28 penalties in all; the Lions converted 47.1% of their 17 man-up opportunities to win the affair.
Senior attack Matt Dolan (No. Massapequa, NY) guided the Lions with a goal and five assists. Midfielders, junior Peter Boucher (Oceanside, NY) and senior Albert Maione (West Islip, NY) benefited with four goals each. Boucher also had two assists. Junior midfielder Frank Limanni (Massapequa Park, NY) controlled the circle with 18 face-off wins (18-of-28) and 14 ground balls, while freshman Tommy Bruno (Wantagh, NY) made six saves in the win.
Freshmen, midfielder Alex Sabia (Conshohocken, PA) and attack Mark Winkelspecht (Laurys Station, PA) helped Wiener and Tharp drive the Chestnut Hill College (4-11, 0-10) effort. Sabia won 11 face-offs (11-of-26), collected seven ground balls and caused a turnover while Winkelspecht recovered three ground balls in addition to his team-high, 26th goal of the season. Freshmen, attack Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario), and defenseman Zach Wilkins (Marlton, NJ) each scored as well. Freshman goalie Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) manned the cage for a majority of the contest (58:44) and he made 17 saves despite taking the loss (3-8).
