Oxford, PA – (3/17/2011) – The Chestnut Hill College softball team swept their first doubleheader since returning from Florida defeating Lincoln University 11-0 and 18-5, both games lasting five innings. In the opener, sophomore Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) led the Griffins at-bat and on the mound, pairing two hits and two runs-batted-in (RBI) with a two-hit, seven-strike out, shutout. In the afternoon's second contest, The Griffins opened and closed with affair with seven-run innings to defeat the Lions with 18 runs on 16 hits.

Chestnut Hill College (3-5) put four runs on the scoreboard in the second inning of the opener. Sophomore shortstop Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) led off the at-bat with a single. An error by the third baseman put two aboard, before sophomore centerfielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ) singled in Benson for the game's first run. After some confusion on the base paths, Wilenta helped herself with a two-out, two-run double. Sophomore first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) followed with a run-scoring single to make it 4-0 Griffins. Five more runs came across in the fourth inning, 9-0, thanks to two Lion errors and a two-run double from senior left fielder Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA). Providing Wilenta with plenty of run support, the Griffins plated two more in the fifth inning, 11-0, for a comfortable victory. Wilenta (2-2) only allowed three Lincoln University (2-6) base runners while striking out seven over five innings.

The Griffins took the second game just as handedly, bookending the contest with seven-run innings. They scored five runs before the first out and after a third-inning, run-scoring, single from freshman left fielder Mary Markowski (Parkton, MD) and a seven-run fifth inning the Griffins  were left with an 18-5 victory. Freshman pitcher Brittany DeGarmo (Mt. Holly, NJ) collected her first collegiate win (1-3) allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six. Benson and junior catcher Gina DeAnnutis (Hammonton, NJ) each recorded three hits and three RBI.

The softball team travels to Queens College on Saturday, March 19, for their next doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
