Box Score 1 Norristown, PA – (3/19/2011) – Chestnut Hill College opened their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a split of this afternoon's doubleheader against Bloomfield College. The Griffins scored a 5-2 win in the first game before allowing the Deacons to even the twin bill with a 4-3, game-two win. Junior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) and senior first baseman Mike Knipe (Sellersville, PA) each recorded three hits between the two contests; junior Dan Morgan (Upper Darby, PA) earned the win in the opener.
Pitching dominated early, but Bloomfield College (5-13, 1-1) scored first platting two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Chestnut Hill College (5-10, 1-1) responded in the bottom of the frame, with Knipe scoring on a grounder out. The Griffins separated in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on five hits and an error. Junior centerfielder Eric Blood (Perkasie, PA) ripped a one-out single past the first baseman and Latchum followed with a base-hit through the right side. A double steal scored Blood and moved Latchum to second base for junior second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA), who delivered a run with the Griffins third single. A fourth single from senior right fielder Dan Etherton (Princeton, NJ) and a triple from Knipe brought two more runs across to land the Griffins a 5-2 advantage. The bullpen took care of the rest, as sophomore Bob Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) and senior Matt Casino (Port Chester, NY) combined for three innings for scoreless relief. Casino collected his fourth save of the season.
In the second contest, the Griffins seized the early advantage with a three-run, first inning. A lead-off walk to Latchum and a Daywalt single allowed the Griffins to score the game's first run on a balk, 1-0. Then Knipe scored Daywalt with a double to right center and later scored himself on a ground out by Blood, 3-0. The Deacons answered in the seventh inning, using three singles to score two runs and chase Griffin starter, senior Ryan Weber (Philadelphia, PA) from the fray, 3-2. Casino (0-2) took over in the eighth inning, but he could not deny the Deacons who stole the contest with a pair of doubles, 4-3.
Weber was awarded no decision after allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks. He struck out three. Junior pitcher Eric Kamp (Warwick, NY) earned the win for the Deacons. He allowed only six base runners and struck out four in seven innings of relief work.
The baseball team breaks from CACC competition to visit West Chester University for a 3:00 p.m. contest on Monday, March 21.
