Lafayette Hill, PA – (3/26/2011) – Fortune eluded Chestnut Hill College in this afternoon's East Coast Conference (ECC) contest, as Dominican College defeated the Griffins 10-9. The Griffins held a slight advantage for a majority of the contest, but the Chargers netted the last two scores to steal the league victory. Sophomore attack Mark Winkelspecht (Laurys Station, PA) headlined the Griffin effort with two goals, three assists, and six ground balls.
Winkelspecht recorded the game's first goal and with the help of freshman attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) the initial Chestnut Hill College (4-3, 1-3) lead was 3-0 (8:20). Dominican College (2-5, 1-2) then evened the contest with three straight scores, 3-3, before the Griffins ended the opening period on a Melnychenko goal, 4-3. Both teams recorded two, second-quarter scores leaving the halftime tally at 6-5, Griffins. The Chargers tied the contest by the end of the third quarter, 8-8, leaving the decision to the final period of play. Junior attack Kevin Festa (Auburn, NY) gave the Griffins the upper hand early in the fourth quarter, 9-8, but the Chargers tied the contest with 10:19 remaining, 9-9. The game-winner came from freshman Thomas Dertinger (Nanuet, NY) with 1:34 to play, his second man-up goal of the affair.
Senior midfielder Alex Jones (St. Albert, Alberta) found Dertinger for the prevailing tally. He led the Chargers with five points; three goals and two assists. Fellow senior midfielder, Jesse Peterson (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) offered three goals and an assist while senior goalkeeper Brendan Bonacum (Port Jefferson Station, NY) made 12 saves in the win (2-5).
Melnychenko was the Griffins leading scorer with four goals. Festa scored two goals and sophomore attack Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) provided two assists, while sophomore goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) made eight saves in the loss (4-3).
The men's lacrosse team continues their ECC schedule with an 11:00 a.m. contest at Wheeling Jesuit University at Sunday, April 3.
