New Castle, DE – (3/9/2011) – The softball team played their second straight day of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader competition at Wilmington University this afternoon. The Wildcats held the Griffins to one hit in the opener, while poor fielding and home hitting led to a 10-0, five inning defeat. The Griffins led the second game early, but the Wildcat bullpen halted the bats and allowing their offense to rally for the 11-4 win.
Of four Chestnut Hill College (3-11, 0-4) base runners, sophomore shortstop Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) recorded the Griffins only hit in the opener. She singled in the second inning and advanced on a misplay in the outfield, but was left stranded at second base. sophomore pitcher Katie Warrington (Townsend, DE) did the work for Wilmington University (12-10, 4-0), striking out eight batters en route to the complete-game victory (6-2).
The Griffins held a 4-1 advantage after their second at-bat of the late game. Four walks and two-run singles from sophomore pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) and sophomore first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) generated the offense, but the lead was short-lived as the Wildcats scored 10 runs in their final five at-bats to complete the afternoon sweep. Warrington won her second game of the day (7-2), teaming with freshman pitcher Danielle Griffin (Greenwood, DE) for five innings of scoreless relief.
The softball team travels to Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday, March 29, to continue their CACC schedule with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
