DeAnnutis Walk-off Grand Slam Steals Split for Softball

Philadelphia, PA – (4/11/2011) – “Clutch” was the word to describe the last two at-bats for Gina DeAnnutis (Hammonton, NJ) this afternoon, as Chestnut Hill College's junior catcher earned the Griffins a split of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with a sixth-inning solo homerun and a walk-off grand slam in the second contest, 6-2. The Golden Falcons won the opener 8-0 in six innings.

Felician College (10-18, 8-4) held a 2-1 lead as Chestnut Hill College (4-22, 1-13) prepared for their final at-bat of the twin bill. A lead-off walk to freshman designated player Mariah Quattlebaum (Rosamond, CA) began the bottom of game two's seventh inning. Sophomore Joan Quinn (Trenton, NJ) pinch ran and then quickly advanced to third base on a misplayed sacrifice bunt. Another Golden Falcon error allowed the Griffins to tie the game, 2-2, before a walk to sophomore pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) loaded the bases. Fresh off her sixth-inning homerun, DeAnnutis took the 2-0 offering over the centerfield fence to deliver victory in walk-off fashion. Wilenta earned the win (3-10) for the Griffins; allowing no earned runs on five hits and a walk. She struck out two.

Game one was not as favorable for the Griffins, as freshman pitcher Tori Bradburn (Ridge, MD) limited Chestnut Hill College to three hits in the opener. Quattlebaum singled to lead-off the third-inning, Wilenta singled in the fifth inning, and senior shortstop Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) singled in the sixth inning.

The softball team will take to the diamond again, tomorrow, Tuesday, April 12, as they host Holy Family University in a 3:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
