Lafayette Hill, PA – (4/16/2011) – St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) led early, but the Chestnut Hill College attack answered with junior Kelly McKay (Perkasie, PA) and freshman Kelly Campbell (Hatboro, PA) leading the Griffins to a 15-13 win in this morning's non-conference contest. Each scored four goals, McKay powering the Griffins early and Campbell assuring victory down the stretch.
Sophomore attack Johannah Mitchell (Pearl River, NY) earned St. Thomas Aquinas College (2-5) the opening advantage. She assisted freshman midfielder Alannah McCalister (Bayport, NY) on the first goal of the game and then scored two unassisted tallies to give the Lady Spartans a 3-0 lead ten minutes into the competition (20:22). Senior midfielder Jillian Sanger (Bowmansville, PA) interrupted the streak with a solo effort at 16:33 and before the end of that minute McKay answered a Lady Spartan goal to cut the deficit to 4-2 (16:07). McKay scored again at 9:31 to ignite the Griffins on a 5-3 run and leave the halftime score even, 7-7. Chestnut Hill College (5-8) echoed the Lady Spartans opening run with a 3-0 streak atop the start of the second half, 10-7 (22:23). Behind junior midfielder Anne Buttafuoco (Williston Park, NY), STAC would climb back within one, 10-9, before Campbell and sophomore attack Christina Squillante (Kings Park, NY) delivered the deciding Griffin goals.
Buttafuoco led all participants with six goals while Mitchell and McCalister supported with three goals apiece. McCalister recorded four draws and three ground balls in addition to her scoring. The Lady Spartan defense was led by sophomore Becky Torres (Nanuet, NY) and graduate goalkeeper Jeanette Gibson (Stony Point, NY). Torres totaled six ground balls and three caused turnovers while Gibson made 15 saves and recovered six ground balls in the loss (2-5).
Sanger and sophomore midfielder Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) kept the Griffins in possession. Sanger recorded five draws, five ground balls, and caused two turnovers while also offering two assists to go with her first-half score. Alexander was equally effective with a goal, an assist, five ground balls, six draws, and three caused turnovers. Sophomore midfielder Brianne Timony (Allentown, NJ) also contributed with two goals and two assists. Squillante totaled three goals. Junior Jenn Delahanty (Staten Island, NY) was the Griffins winning goalkeeper (2-7), she made 15 saves and collected four ground balls.
The women's lacrosse team returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tomorrow, Sunday, April 17, when they travel to Post University for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
