Griffins Second-Half Defense Dooms Eagles

Waterbury, CT – (4/17/2011) – Chestnut Hill College closed their season series with Post University on a defensively dominate, second-half performance. The Griffins led the Eagles to an 11-9 halftime advantage, before junior goalkeeper Jenn Delahanty (Staten Island, NY) and the Chestnut Hill College defense took over for a 23-10 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory.
 
Junior Kelly McKay (Perkasie, PA) scored three times in each half and netted the last of her first- half tallies with 27 second remaining in the period. She led a host of Griffins who contributed to a narrow halftime lead, 11-9. Following intermission, Chestnut Hill College (6-8, 4-5) separated with three quick goals; the first coming on an unassisted effort from sophomore midfielder Brianne Timony (Allentown, NJ) and the second two from the stick of sophomore attack Christina Squillante (Kings Park, NY), 14-9 (25:33). Post University (1-12, 0-8) interrupted at 23:37 on a goal from senior attack Mallorie Michalak (Meriden, CT), 14-10, but it would be their last goal of the contest as the Griffins limited the Eagles to ten second-half shots. Delahanty stopped eight of those to total 17 saves in the win (3-7).
 
Michalak led the Eagles with five goals, three ground balls, three draws, and a caused turnover. Freshman midfielder Stephanie Marran (Patchogue, NY) helped with four goals and six draw controls. Freshman goalkeeper Jacqueline Jolles (Hamden, CT) collected two ground balls and made 19 saves in the loss (1-12).
 
Freshman attack Kelly Campbell (Hatboro, PA) and senior midfielder Jillian Sanger (Bowmansville, PA) controlled the middle of the field for the Griffins, stifling the Eagles. Campbell caused four turnovers and grabbed two ground balls, while Sanger was sensational with three ground balls, six draws, and two caused turnovers in addition to her three goals and two assists. McKay's six goals topped a group of high-scoring Griffins. Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) recorded five goals and Timony added four.
 
The women's lacrosse team remains on the road to visit Holy Family University for a 4:00 p.m. CACC contest on Tuesday, April 19.
