Second Half Separates Lady Rams from Griffins

Lafayette Hill, PA – (4/21/2011) – In a loosely played affair Philadelphia University emerged as the victor, defeating Chestnut Hill College 20-10 in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. There were 66 turnovers and 74 fouls in all, as the local, league rivals battled the cold, the officials, and each other. Sophomore midfielders Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) and Brianne Timony (Allentown, NJ) led the Griffins with three goals apiece; Alexander also recorded six draws, four ground balls, and caused three turnovers.
 
Alexander put Chestnut Hill College (6-10, 4-7) on the scoreboard first, 1-0 (28:35), but the advantage was short-lived as a five-goal, Philadelphia University (7-6, 7-2) run separated the Lady Rams midway through the opening half (15:00), 5-1. Junior attack Taylor Peltzer (Holland, PA) was the kingpin, scoring the Lady Rams' first two goals and assisting on a third in the 11-minute stretch. The Griffins responded with four consecutive scores of their own knotting the game up at 5-5 (6:42). The first two goals came on free position attempts from junior attack Kelly McKay (Perkasie, PA) and Timony and the second two goals were off the feed from senior midfielder Jillian Sanger (Bowmansville, PA). However, it was the Lady Rams who separated for an 8-6 halftime advantage thanks to the three-headed attack of Peltzer, junior midfielder Caribeth Shappell (Lancaster, PA) and freshman attack Emily Ray (Bedminster, NJ).
 
The Lady Ram trio kept the pedal down in the second half and led the Griffins to a 20-10 final. Peltzer finished with 11 points, totaling five goals and six assists. Ray recorded nine points with eight goals and an assist, while Shappell provided three goals, four assists, and five draws. On defense, freshman midfielder Melissa Styer (Severna Park, MD) totaled five caused turnovers and five ground balls to help freshman goalkeeper Cory Lombardo (Naples, FL) to the win (7-6). Lombardo recovered three ground balls and made seven saves.
 
Sanger totaled three assists and McKay scored two goals to help Alexander and Timony on the offensive end. Defensively, freshman KarlaAne Klouda (Belvidere, NJ) headlined the Griffin effort with three caused turnovers and two ground balls in addition to her three draw controls. In goal, junior Jenn Delahanty (Staten Island, NY) and freshman Jessica Pennell (Hopkinton, NH) split time and combined for five saves; Delahanty took the loss (3-9).
 
The women's lacrosse team concludes their 2011 season on Senior Day, Wednesday, April 27, when they host Wilmington University in a 7:00 p.m. CACC contest.
