Philadelphia, PA – (4/6/2011) – Chestnut Hill College battled Wilmington University to a narrow 2-0 defeat in the opener, before the Wildcat bats awoke for a 12-1, five inning; win in the second game of this afternoon's non-conference doubleheader. Sophomore centerfielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ) recorded the Griffins only hit of the first game, while sophomore pitcher Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) kept game in reach.
Schempp struck a one-out single in third inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, but, that was as far as Chestnut Hill College (3-19) would make it in the opener as sophomore Katie Warrington (Townsend, DE) struck out 14 in her one-hit, one-walk performance. Junior designated player Gina DeAnnutis (Hammonton, NJ) was the Griffins only other base runner with a walk in the fourth inning. Benson held Wilmington University (16-12) to two runs on four hits and ten walks.
The Griffins netted their only run of the afternoon in response to a three-run, Wildcat first inning. A one-out walk to senior second baseman Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) put a runner aboard and after a DeAnnutis single she moved to third base. A wild pitch two batters later allowed Ciancia to score, 3-1. But it was all Wildcats after that as the visitors totaled 12 runs on 12 hits to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The softball team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule tomorrow, Thursday, April 7, with a trip to Philadelphia University. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
