Men’s Lacrosse Falls In Battle of ECC Griffins

Greensburg, PA – (4/9/2011) – Seton Hill University led by two at halftime, 6-4, and withstood a third-quarter Chestnut Hill College rally to win this afternoon's East Coast Conference (ECC) contest by an 11-9 final. Freshman attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) totaled six points in the contest, leading the Griffins effort with four goals.
 
Seton Hill University (5-4, 3-3) stayed a step ahead in the first half, leading Chestnut Hill College (5-4, 2-4) to a 3-2 first quarter advantage and a 6-4 halftime deficit. Chestnut Hill College trimmed the margin to one by the end of the third quarter, 7-6, but Seton Hill University responded with a 4-3 edge in the final frame, 11-9.
 
Freshman attack Matt Delmonico (Port Moody, British Columbia) led the home Griffins with eight points; six goals and two assists. Fellow freshman, midfielder Ethan Garland (Victoria, British Columbia) offered two goals and two assists, while another classmate, freshman midfielder Jimmy Cogley (Peters Township, PA) controlled the face-off circle with eight ground balls off a 17-for-23 (73.9%) performance on restarts. Sophomore goalkeeper Christopher Ilse (Vestal, NY) made 13 saves in the win (5-4).
 
Melnychenko added two ground balls to his offense production. Sophomore midfielders Mark Winkelspecht (Laurys Station, PA) and Junji Wiener (Huston, TX) supported with two goals apiece. Defensively, sophomore Joe Rucinsky (Camp Hill, PA) helped with five ground balls while classmate, goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) totaled eight saves and a ground ball in the loss (5-4).
 
The men's lacrosse team returns home to break from ECC play with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Immaculata University on Wednesday, April 13.
