Rockville Centre, NY – (4/30/2011) – Sophomore midfielder
Mark Winkelspecht (Laurys Station, PA) captained a late Chestnut Hill College charge, but Molloy College avoided defeat with the sound of the final horn. The Lions claimed the East Coast Conference (ECC) win, 16-15. Winkelspecht scored four of his five goals in the last 8:06; he also recorded two assists, and hustled three ground balls.
Freshman midfielder
Bart Pierre (Maplewood, NJ) scored the affair's first goal just 46 seconds after the opening face-off, but the rest of the first quarter was all Molloy College (5-9, 3-6) as the Lions marched out to a 7-1 advantage. Chestnut Hill College (7-6, 3-6) worked back into the contest, closing the gap to four by halftime on the effort of their attack; freshman
Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) and junior
Kevin Festa (Auburn, NY), 9-5. The Lions added some insurance in the third quarter by outscoring the Griffins 4-2, 13-7. They would need it as Winkelspecht triggered the rally with assists to freshman midfielder
Joe Caramante (East Meadow, NY) and sophomore defenseman
Tom Carfagna (Laurys Station, PA), before scoring the four of the Griffins six closing goals. Unfortunately, the Lions kept Winkelspecht at bay for the final 2:56 to escape with the 16-15 win.
Sophomore attack Kenny Lutz (Farmingdale, NY) led the Lions with six goals. He was helped by senior midfielder Brandon Peyer (Williston Park, NY) and junior attack Ryan Kudlek (Oceanside, NY), Peyer provided two goals and three assists while Kudlek contributed three goals and one assist. Junior goalkeeper Glenn Greubel (Merrick, NY) made seven saves.
Melnychenko, Festa, and sophomore attack
Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) each totaled three points to help Winkelspecht; who recorded season-highs in goals (5) and points (7). Sophomore midfielder
Alex Sabia (Conshohocken, PA) won 18-of-29 face-offs (62.1%) and recovered 15 ground balls to contribute to the Griffins cause while sophomore goalkeeper
Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) made 15 saves and collected three ground balls in the loss (7-6).
