Cougars Collect Two From Griffins

Caldwell, NJ – (4/30/2011) – Chestnut Hill College scored in each of their first, three innings, but so did Caldwell College. Unfortunately, the Cougars also platted more runs to defeat the Griffins 6-3 in the opener. They completed the sweep of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with a 9-1, six-inning win in the second game. Sophomore first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) led the Griffin effort with three hits on the afternoon.
 
Chestnut Hill College (4-30, 1-21) was one step behind in their first, two at-bats as with each run they scored Caldwell College (26-19, 16-9) answered with two. 4-2. Each side scored a run in the third inning netting the scored at 5-3, before the Cougars added a fourth-inning insurance run, 6-3. Cavallo was 2-for-3 with a run-batted-in (RBI) to lead the Griffins.
 
The Cougars carried their momentum into the second game, with three runs in their first at-bat (3-0). Freshman pitcher Brittany DeGarmo (Mt. Holly, NJ) looked to help herself with an RBI single in the second inning, 3-1, but the Cougars denied the Griffin a chance to catch-up scoring six runs in their next five at-bats. Cavallo, DeGarmo, and freshman left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, FL) each recorded hits for the Griffins.
 
The softball team returns home tomorrow, Sunday, May 1, to host Nyack College in a 9:00 a.m. contest. Seniors, Shannan Burdziak (Elkins Park, PA) and Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) will be recognized in a Senior Day ceremony.
