Philadelphia, PA – (5/3/2011) – The softball team closed their 2011 season on a good note with a 6-1 win in game two of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Holy Family University. Solid hitting throughout the line-up and a yielding relief appearance from sophomore pitcher Veronica Wilenta (Brick, NJ) led to the victory after, the Tigers roughed-up the Griffins 11-0 in a five-inning opener.

Holy Family University (13-29, 10-16) looked the capture a sweep with a second-inning homerun in the twin bill's closing contest, 1-0. Unfortunately, Wilenta entered the fray and tamed the Tigers over the final four innings. She allowed two hits and three walks while the Griffins went to work at the plate. After a lead-off single from senior catcher Janean Ciancia (Trainer, PA) and a double from sophomore shortstop Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) Chestnut Hill College (6-32, 3-23) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Following a Tiger pitching change, another Griffin run would cross on a single from freshman left fielder Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs, FL) to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead heading to the fifth inning. Wilenta led off the Griffins half of the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second base on the overthrow by the Tigers shortstop. Two more singles brought her home, 3-1, and forced a pitching change before sophomore first baseman Giana Cavallo (Turnersville, NJ) plated two more runs with a double to left field, 5-1. Not done yet, a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Gina DeAnnuntis (Hammonton, NJ) extended the lead to 6-1 before the inning's last out. Wilenta would take care of the rest for her fourth win of the season (4-14).

Junior designated player Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black (Whitby, Ontario) crushed two home runs and totaled six runs-batted-in to power the Tigers in the opener. Freshman first baseman Hayley Brennan (Frankford, DE) helped with a three hits and four RBI. The Griffins mustered only four hits of the Tiger battery as DeAnnuntis, Mattaliano, Wilenta, and sophomore center fielder Allie Schempp (Clayton, NJ) each recorded fruitless singles. The Tigers would overrun the Griffins by an 11-0, five-inning, final.

The softball team finishes the 2011 season at 6-32 overall and 3-23 in the CACC.
