Griffins Survive Winless Warriors, Claim Ninth CACC Conquest

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (2/4/2012) – Feeling comfortable on their home court, Chestnut Hill College shot 52.5% (31-of-59) from the field to overcome 19 turnovers and Nyack College with an 81-76 victory. Four Griffins finished the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) affair in double figures, led by a double-double performance, 18 points and 13 rebounds, from senior forward Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA). With their ninth CACC win of the season, the Griffins ensure themselves of their highest conference win total since joining the league in 2007.
 
Nyack College (0-21, 0-11) controlled play off the opening tip-off, but the five-point, 7-2; advantage was short–lived with a trifecta of Griffins three-point baskets pushing Chestnut Hill College (16-7, 9-2) ahead, 17-12, with 12:06 remaining in the first half. The Griffins then took their turn as the pace car, leading by as many as eight, 25-17 (6:59), until the Warriors battle back behind the relentless effort of freshman guard Chris Hampton (Queens, NY). He scored seven straight points to give the Warriors a brief advantage, 34-33 (2:30), before the Griffins reclaimed the lead heading to intermission, 42-40, on an and-one from freshman guard Luke Dickson (Pitman, NJ) and four free throws from sophomore guard Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, PA). After halftime, the Griffins maintained a comfortable distance until building momentum behind Comas' post play. Junior guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ) scored a layup at 8:53, extending the Griffin lead to 13, 69-56, before the Warriors final push. Hampton continued to lead the good fight for the Warriors, but the visitors could only cut the lead to three, 79-76, before Bogans put the nail in the coffin with one last jump shot, 81-76 (0:11).
 
Hampton led all scorers with 21 points. He also offered six rebounds, seven assists, and two steals to the Warrior effort. Three other Warriors supported Hampton with double-digit performances; sophomore guard Jose Pena-Benjamin (Rahway, NJ) totaled 18 points and three steals, freshman guard Khalid Samuels (Mount Vernon, NY) recorded 17 points and four assists, and senior forward Lafayette Curtis (Staten Island, NY) chipped in with 13 points, two blocks, and two steals.
 
Comas was 7-of-13 (53.8%) from the floor and 4-of-5 (80.0%) at the free throw line to lead a well-balanced Griffin effort. Bogans was chased up and down the floor while totaling his 16 points, he also grabbed six rebounds. Junior guard Francis Ashe (Greenbelt, MD) scored 13 points, 11 of which came in the first half, while senior guard Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, PA) contributed 12 points and four assists to help facilitate the victory. Dickson and DiRugeris each scored nine points.
 
The men's basketball team continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, February 7, with an 8:00 p.m. contest at Philadelphia University.
