Hillburn, NY – (3/16/2012) – Dominican College scored one goal in each of the first two quarters, but the Chargers goals only served as interruptions to the Chestnut Hill College offense. The Griffins led 10-2 at halftime and after a 7-0 third-quarter streak the deficit reached 15, 17-2, before settling on a 19-4 final. Sophomore attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) and junior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, PA) led the Griffins their second East Coast Conference (ECC) win of the season with five points apiece.
 
Melnychenko deposited three goals in the first quarter to help Chestnut Hill College (5-1, 2-1) to a 4-1 advantage. He netted his first off the feed from junior midfielder Junji Wiener (Houston, TX) at 13:39, 1-0, and after a Dominican College (0-2, 0-1) goal, 1-1, he bookended an unassisted Owen goal to give the Griffins a 4-1 first-quarter lead. At the start of the second quarter, senior midfielder Matthew Brown (Sparkill, NY) scored for the Chargers to cut the Griffin lead to 4-2 at 12:04. However, they would not score again until 8:36 remained in the contest as the Griffins soared on a 13-0 run that spanned 32 minutes of play (32:08), 17-2. Each side totaled two goals in the final frame to leave the final at a 19-4 spread.
 
Sophomore attack Chris Delaney (Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada) led the Chargers with two goals and three ground balls. Senior attack Korin Pierce (Middleburg, VA) also totaled two points, recording a goal and an assist in addition to a ground ball. Sophomore defenseman Anton Gjeloshi (Pomona, NY) contributed five ground ball recoveries, a caused turnover, and seven wins in the face-off circle (7-of-22, .318). Junior goalkeeper Andrew Slater (Brookfield, CT) took the loss (0-2) while making 18 saves and three ground balls.
 
After three goals in the first quarter, Melnychenko scored two more over the remaining 45 minutes. He also recorded two ground balls and a caused turnover. In addition to his offensive production, Owen recorded two ground ball recoveries to the victory. Junior midfielder Mike Duddy (Toms River, NJ), freshman midfielder Chris Mertens (Freeport, NY), and sophomore midfielder Bart Pierre (Maplewood, NJ) each totaled three points as key offensive contributors; Mertens won 9-of-12 (.750) in the face-off circle and hustled to nine ground balls. The Griffin defensive effort was led by sophomore defenseman Chris Schaffer (Lititz, PA), who recorded one ground ball and caused two turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) made four saves and two ground ball recoveries in his fifth win of the season (5-1). 
 
The men's lacrosse team continues ECC play at home on Saturday, March 24, with an 11:00 a.m. game against Wheeling Jesuit University.
