Griffins Edge Eagles In Game Two, But Drop Pitcher’s Duel in Opener

3/17/2012 8:25:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Waterbury, CT – (3/17/2012) – Chestnut Hill College picked up their 2012 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule where they finished their 2011 season, at Post University. The Eagles won a pitcher's duel in the opener, 2-1 in 12 innings, before the Griffins out slugged the home team in the second game of the twin bill, 7-6. A big third inning scored five Griffins in game two to help facilitate the split, while the Eagles took advantage of a late Griffin error to win the opener.

Chestnut Hill College (8-8, 1-1) opened the afternoon with two singles, the first off the bat of senior left fielder Alex Latchum (Warrington, PA) and the second off the bat of freshman third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, NJ), Latchum would score the first run of the game, 1-0, on a grounder to second base from senior second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA). Junior right fielder Alex Villar (Mesa, AZ) tied the affair up for Post University (6-10, 1-1), plating an Eagle in the third inning with a two-out single to center field, 1-1. Pitching then took over, with Griffin junior Bob Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) and Eagle senior Cutler Ruby (Diboll, TX) battling for nine innings. Unfortunately for the Griffins, a one-out single in the 12th inning and an error by their first baseman allowed the Eagle to bring the winning run home, 2-1. Steen, freshman right fielder Mike McLaughlin (Philadelphia, PA), and sophomore center fielder Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, PA), each recorded two hits in five at-bats (2-for-5), while Hopkins allowed one run on five hits and a walk. He struck out four.

Game two saw a lot more offense with each side totaling 11 hits. The Griffins got it started in the first inning with Latchum lining a lead-off single, moving to second on a sacrifice and scoring on a single and error combination off of Daywalt's shot to second base, 1-0. The Eagles responded in the bottom of the frame, using a lead-off single of their own to produce two runs with a double and a sacrifice fly, 2-1. The Eagles held the advantage for only a short while, as the Griffins turned the tables with five runs on five hits in the third inning, 6-2; sophomore designated hitter Ray Puskar (Green Lane, PA), junior shortstop Joe Crane (Newtown, PA), and Lites recorded run-scoring singles. The Griffins added one more run in the sixth inning, 7-2, for good measure. It would be needed with the Eagles scoring two runs both the seventh, 7-4, and eighth, 7-6, innings. Fortunately, Steen had the gall to hold off the Eagles for his first save of the season (1). He struck out one while allowing a hit and two walks over 1.2 innings. Latchum led the offense with three hits (3-for-5) and two runs scored.

The baseball team continues their CACC schedule at home on Tuesday, March 20, with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against Philadelphia University.
