Wildcats Use Overtime to Topple Griffins

New Castle, DE – (4/11/2012) – A free position goal with 2:20 remaining in regulation allowed Wilmington University to tie Chestnut Hill College, 13-13, and force an extra frame in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. The Wildcats used the additional time to their advantage, outscoring the Griffins 2-1 overtime for a 15-14 victory. Junior midfielder Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) total five points to lead the offense, while junior goalkeeper Jenn Delahanty (Staten Island, NY) kept the Griffins alive with 20 saves, nine ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
 
Chestnut Hill College (2-8, 2-5) used a 5-0 run midway through the second half to turn a 12-8 Wilmington University (7-4, 4-3) lead into a 13-12 Griffin advantage. The first goal of the Griffin run came on a connection between attacks, as senior Kelly McKay (Perkasie, PA) found junior Christina Squillante (Kings Park, NY) with 14:50 remaining in the second half, 12-9. Then, four straight unassisted Griffin goals followed with Alexander (12:54 and 4:48) bookending goals from sophomore attack Kelly Campbell (Hatboro, PA) (8:36) and junior attack Nicole Covella (Vineland, NJ) (5:53). With 2:20 left on the clock, junior midfielder Elizabeth Case (Perry Hall, MD) tied the games for the Wildcats, scoring on a free position opportunity, 13-13. The stalemate held to the final horn, facilitating overtime. The Griffin went up first in the extra frame with junior midfielder Brianne Timony (Allentown, NJ) scoring an unassisted goal just 13 seconds after the opening draw, 14-13, unfortunately Case netted another free position shot at 2:30, 14-14, and junior midfielder Molly Taylor (Forest Hill, MD) added eventual game-winner at 1:22 with an unassisted effort, 15-14.
 
Case led the Wildcats with six goals, two assists, and a ground ball. Taylor and sophomore attack Jessica Stratton (Magnolia, DE) totaled three points apiece; Taylor with two goals and an assist in addition to a caused turnover and Stratton with three goals to go along with two ground balls, four draws, and a caused turnover. Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Bel Air, MD) made ten saves, grabbed five ground balls, and caused a turnover in the win (7-4).
 
Alexander hustled to five draws and two ground balls while causing one turnover in addition to her team-leading, offensive performance. Timony and Campbell each chipped in with three goals, Timony also recorded seven draws, a ground ball, and a caused turnover. Despite her stellar performance in net, Delahanty took the loss (2-8).
 
The women's lacrosse team continues CACC play at Dominican College on Saturday, April 14. Opening draw is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
